This weekend is the season’s final concert of the Cascade Winds, which will be held on
Sunday June 1st, 2:00 pm
at Summit High School.
As a prelude to summer, the Cascade Winds musicians and I are looking forward to another opportunity to perform some terrific literature for wind ensemble. We have two wonderful marches, Alford’s Army of the Nile (so British, you’ll be “gasping for a cuppa”!), and Broadbent’s Centaur March. Boysen’s beautiful and lyrical Song for My Children will fill your heart and Shaffer’s Costa Del Sol will have you wanting to dance the flamenco in the aisles! Anyone who has read Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows will appreciate the characters, grandeur, and humor in de Meij’s work of the same name. And not to be missed, Leshnoff’s Symphony for Winds is a profound work originally commissioned for The United States Marine Band in honor of its 225th Anniversary.
Admission is free and doors open approximately 30 minutes prior to the concert. The concert will also be live-streamed, the link for which is listed below.

The Jewish Community Religious School is a program for all Jewish children of Central Oregon. JCRSCO is a coalition of parents and teachers aligned to provide a rich and transformative Jewish and Hebrew education for all our children.
The Jewish Community Religious School is a special place where all Jewish children in Central Oregon are welcome. It is a place where teachers can connect with students and not only share knowledge and create lifelong learners, but help to foster relationships among young families in Bend and the surrounding areas. JCRSCO is a small community and depends on parent volunteers to help teachers on Sundays, as well as organize special events.
From Religious School education to Hebrew lessons, to Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation to continuing education courses, our curriculum strives to serve everyone, from the youngest early learners to teenagers eager to continue their Jewish education.
The Jewish Community Religious School serves all – they are not affiliated with any one congregation, and membership to a particular synagogue, while encouraged, is not required.

Berlin: A Jewish Ode to the Metropolis
June 8 – October 26, 2025
Berlin: A Jewish Ode to the Metropolis, showcases photographs by Portland photographer Jason Langer. The project is deeply personal to Langer, a reconciliation of impressions of the Holocaust that were seeded in him as a 10-year-old living on a kibbutz in Israel. Even after moving to America, Langer carried a deep fear of Germany, and Berlin, in particular. Years later, he set out for Berlin to confront and capture these impressions in film.
Explaining the personal, cultural, and historical complexity of the subject, Langer says, “It’s a historical project about Berlin through the eyes of a Jewish person two generations later, and how much that threat of death and annihilation has transferred to my generation and beyond.”
The photographs themselves feel timeless, characteristic of Langer’s work. His photographs are formally composed, rich and moody, favoring darker tones. Langer lends a poetic sensibility to classic views of Berlin, including historical remnants of the Holocaust and Jewish life, as well as intimate glimpses that tell specific, individual stories. It’s the juxtaposition between the broad strokes of a horrifying history and the smallest intricacies of daily life that Langer brings to the attention of the viewer.
“I tried to photograph a history of the city,” Langer explains, “representing multiple generations and eras, all the way from medieval times through modernity. By mixing that all together, I wanted to give viewers an experience of what it’s like to be in contemporary Berlin, surrounded by the weight of the city’s history, for good and bad.”
