Rabbi Jay Shupack loves the diversity of Shalom Bayit. We come from incredibly varied backgrounds, sharing our love of Judaism, community and the natural beauty surrounding us. Rabbi Jay grew up in Pennsylvania in an Orthodox home and attended ten years of Yeshiva Day School. For five years, he lived and studied in Israel. He earned his smicha from the Va’ad Harabanim in New York. He has previously held positions as cantor for Chabad for four years from 1995 to 1999 and spent two years as rabbinical pastor for the Seacrest Village Retirement Home in Encinitas California before moving to Bend in 2000.
When Rabbi Jay arrived, we were in the basement of the Methodist Church and he helped the community through the process of purchasing our present home on 5 acres with mountain views at the corner of Ward Road and Modoc Lane (see directions). Our services have a traditional feel with non-traditional content. Rabbi Jay makes the services inclusive and joyful and he makes sure that everyone who wants to participate has a part. We have respect for all branches and pathways of Judaism. Rabbi Jay is married to Judy, head of Jewish education, and has three grown children, Josh, Joel and Jamina.
